Stroke Services

Stroke is the third leading killer and the most common cause of adult disability in the United States. Every year, more than 750,000 Americans fall victim to stroke.

When a stroke happens, minutes matter. That is why Quincy Medical Center’s Stroke Service is available 24 hours per day, seven days a week, providing an immediate response when a stroke patient comes to Quincy Medical Center.  In 2004, QMC opened its $2.7 million Computed Tomography Suite, located in close proximity to QMC’s Emergency Department, to expedite testing and save precious time in obtaining vital information to treat stroke patients.

Quincy Medical Center is certified by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health as a Primary Stroke Service. The designation recognizes QMC’s high quality care and established clinical protocols for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients.

The warning signs for stroke include:

If you think you or a loved one is having a stroke, call 911 immediately.

QMC also has 24-hour neurology coverage, which is a vital component to properly diagnose and treat stroke victims.

Stroke Outreach and Health Education

Our Cardiovascular and Stroke Services team is committed to offering community and clinical educational programming to help our patients to recognize stroke signs and symptoms so they may act quickly and dial 911. Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

Quincy Medical Center is committed to staying at the leading edge of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of vascular disorders. An estimated 20 to 30 million people in the US are at risk for vascular disorders, which include peripheral arterial disease, carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysms and stroke.

Prevention

The Prevention program identifies and treats patients who have disorders or lifestyle issues that contribute to atherosclerosis. Physicians, counselors, and nutritionists are available to manage patients with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes, and to facilitate smoking cessation and exercise programs.

Detection

In 2004, QMC opened a dedicated Vascular Laboratory, offering non-invasive evaluation of vascular disorders. The laboratory’s sophisticated technology includes pulse volume recording equipment to measure blood flow, a new state-of-the-art Doppler Ultrasound to detect blockage in the arteries, and a treadmill for post-exercise vascular testing to identify the presence, location and severity of a vascular disorder.  Patients also have access to the full scope of diagnostic services provided through the Cardiovascular Services Center.

Surgery

When surgery is required, QMC brings together specialists from vascular medicine and vascular surgery, radiology, neurology and nephrology.

Our team can treat many vascular diseases and offers endovascular procedures to open blocked blood vessels within the use of general anesthesia or surgical incisions.
